High Gear Coaching

I'm Stanton Truxillo, living in Austin, Texas. I've been cycling since I was a kid, and never lost my love for the bike. I've biked for transportation, toured in the U.S. and overseas, and raced (with some success) for over 30 years. In that time I've logged over 150,000 miles. I'm a USA Cycling certified Expert Coach, but have shut down my coaching business and am getting back to work in the "real world" of petroleum geophysics.

The Culprit

Aha! Gotcha! I couldn't figure why my knee suddenly gave out on a long ride, but in a conversation yesterday with Marlene Merritt I mentioned that my Dura-Ace cleats had so little float, that...

and she gave me this puzzled look, and said, "Too little float? They have too much for me."

DUH! I remembered that D-A cleats (the float ones I use) have about 6 degrees of float. But mine don't, anymore.

So I went to my bike bag and got out the shoes, and sure enough, the cleats are so squashed and mangled from walking around over rocks in the yard that not only do they no longer have float, they actually turn my foot in a different direction than they used to. I guess the distortion came so slowly that I didn't notice until my knee finally said, "Enough already. You aren't paying attention. Now PAY ATTENTION TO THIS."

I bought two pair of new cleats today and installed one pair, keeping the other for when the next ones go bad, and I'll be watching next time.

Back to the ice and ibuprofen and exercises.
